VHF/UHF Slab Testing Solution: Volumetric Conductivity & Loss

The MWI VHF/UHF Slab Testing Solution is a large-format NDT platform engineered for the deep-penetration characterization of thick industrial materials. Specifically designed for “slabs” up to 6 inches thick, this system operates in the critical 30 MHz to 3 GHz range. It is the definitive solution for measuring the volumetric insertion loss and bulk conductivity of heavy-duty aerospace absorbers, honeycomb cores, and structural foam.

Enclosed-Boundary Engineering

At VHF/UHF frequencies, controlling the electromagnetic environment is the primary challenge. This system utilizes a unique hybrid architecture:

  • Enclosed Transmit Boundary: The signal is launched within a metal-bounded enclosure to ensure maximum energy is directed into the material.
  • Open Receive Boundary: The receiving assembly is designed without a metal boundary to eliminate internal resonance and standing waves, ensuring a pure transmission (S21) measurement.
  • Large-Scale Iris: A 30-inch square aperture allows for the evaluation of bulk material properties without the edge interference common in smaller test fixtures.

The MWI Proprietary Advantage

Accurately extracting conductivity (S/m) from a 6-inch thick slab at 30 MHz requires more than just a VNA. This system relies on MWI’s proprietary calibration and data reduction suite. Our software accounts for the complex enclosed-field physics to deliver a linear correlation between simulated and real-world results, allowing for precise conductivity extraction and loss mapping.

Key Technical Specifications

  • Frequency Range: Broadband coverage from 30 MHz to 3 GHz.
